Tell me about your professional background

I’ve worked in the EHS world for nearly 18 years now, primarily in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries. I joined AWS over three years ago and I look after their Environmental Management System.

Why did you decide to do the course?

When working in AWS, sustainability is a big consideration. For me, doing the course made sense as a means to look into the future and identify what else we need to be prepared for. The faculty were very good and knowledgeable and it was great that they were real experts working in their prospective fields.

Can you tell me about your learning experience on the course?

The course gave me a good understanding of the background and history of sustainability topics. It also highlighted what we as a company should be looking at. It helped us realise why our customers want us to be sustainable and how we can meet the requirements. On a personal level, I feel the learnings will help in my career development too.

What has been the impact of doing the course?

The CSRD is a new thing now that wasn’t covered in Diploma and it’s something we’re looking at now. In fact, one of my colleagues has already signed up for the ISS CSRD course. In terms of other things, we’re looking at how we can improve our environmental performance on the ground. We’re also focused on continuous improvement. We were already doing a lot of sustainability activities but the knowledge from the course is helping us to do even more. In every region where we have data centres, we have a sustainability team looking for improvements.

What would you say to someone who is on the fence about doing the course?

Do it – the cost is relatively low and it does help by giving you background knowledge and a strong understanding of complex topics. The information on these topics is quite difficult to find online too. I often go back through my course notes if I encounter something I’m uncertain about.
