The course is a very worthwhile investment in yourself”

Diploma in Business Sustainability Graduate

Tell me about your professional background

I’ve worked in the telecommunication sector for over ten years now. I work for a company called Digicel Group, and we operate in 26 markets across the Caribbean and the ocean regions.

Why did you decide to do a business sustainability course?

For me, there were a number of reasons why I wanted to pursue a business sustainability course. Firstly, sustainability is an evolving trend, and a lot more companies are now focusing on a lean structure and how to make their business more sustainable for the future. Secondly, I was very intrigued by the topic.

I took a chance, having no prior knowledge about sustainability, and I was very proud I was met with such a great investment. Finally, for me, I believe in being proactive rather than reactive. I always want to be relevant in my career, and with sustainability becoming more important, it only made sense for me to start learning about it.

Why did you choose the Institute of Sustainability Studies as your educational provider?

I did a lot of research online, and I felt from a cost standpoint, the Diploma in Business Sustainability was very cost-effective. I also liked the idea that payment plans were available. The big deciding factor for me was how responsive the team was when I sent my request for interest. Within minutes of sending this, the Learning Support Team responded to me.

Can you tell me about your learning experience on the course?

The content was very informative. I like the concept of putting real-world situations in the business case and the focus on how climate change is everyone’s responsibility, and these themes were featured throughout the course.

The faculty were very interactive, and the quality was definitely there. The content is world-class. I appreciated that the grading system was difficult too, because it meant if you got the Diploma, you had done very well.

I liked the multiple-choice questions and enjoyed reading the case studies. I also enjoyed being in a cohort with other people; I’ve made a lot of great connections from the course that I keep in touch with now.

What were your favourite topics the course covered?

I enjoyed learning about the UN Sustainable Development Goals because it is so broad, but there is a lot that is relevant to us within the telecommunications sector. I also liked the biodiversity module because it showed how everything is interconnected.

Managing waste was another interesting topic, and I thoroughly enjoyed the greenwashing section of the course. I learned a lot about marketing strategies and how to identify greenwashing. The sustainable funding topic was also fascinating.

What has been the impact of doing the course on your career?

The course has made me eager to learn more about sustainability as a whole, and I’m currently enrolled in other courses that focus on areas like sustainability strategies and sustainability leadership. The course also helped me to become an important decision-maker in my organisation. I’m playing an important role in how we run the business sustainably with more effective, streamlined processes and policies.

What would you say to someone who is on the fence about doing the course?

I’ve already recommended the course to fellow colleagues because I view it as a very worthwhile investment in yourself. In the next five years, sustainability will be a major topic of discussion, so every organisation will be looking for experts to fill roles that require green skills.
