Asda and Too Good To Go expand partnership to tackle food waste

Asda Too Good To Go Partnership

Asda recently announced it will be expanding its business sustainability partnership with the surplus food marketplace Too Good To Go. The goal of the expansion will be to reduce food waste across almost 1000 locations.

This initiative has been expanded to include more Asda supermarkets such as Asda Express Stores and food service outlets within Asda locations like Greggs, LEON, Sbarro, and Subway.

Too Good To Go offers surplus but still edible food through its app in the form of ‘Surprise Bags’ customers can buy at a reduced price. Bags will be available for £3.30 at Asda supermarkets and will contain a minimum of £9 worth of goods.

The items in the bags may include chilled food, bakery goods, ready meals, and produce nearing its expiry date. Participating stores can be found in the Too Good To Go app, and customers can collect during specified time windows.

Asda’s commitment to tackling food waste

Sam Dickson, Vice President for Commercial Strategy and Operations, said that Asda is delighted to be bringing Too Good To Go to more sites across its estate and food service partners.

He added that they remain committed to tackling food waste through innovative solutions, and they are already witnessing great uptake from customers using Too Good To Go and experiencing the impact it can make towards curbing food waste.

The initiative comes following a trial run in numerous Asda supermarkets and convenience stores. Since the partnership started in 2021 through EG Group sites, over two million kilograms of food have been saved from waste.

The bigger rollout aligns with Asda’s continued efforts to reduce food waste through a variety of initiatives and partnerships. Earlier in the year, Asda expanded its food donation scheme by working with local food-sharing app Olio and food redistribution charity FareShare.

These strides aim to redirect surplus food to those in need via FareShare’s network of over 8,500 charities. Meanwhile, Olio helps facilitate donations from Asda’s back-of-store operations.

Final thoughts

Asda’s expanded partnership with Too Good To Go highlights the significant role businesses can play in reducing food waste and supporting a greener future. By offering surplus food to consumers at reduced prices, Asda is not only cutting down on food waste but also promoting a more responsible approach to food distribution.

This initiative is a strong example of how large organisations can lead by example. As businesses play an essential role in driving the sustainability agenda, education is the crucial first step.
